In 2021 she took a Blue Wave BJJ Beginner's Course and began her own Jiu Jitsu journey. As well as training at Blue Wave and regularly competing, Claire heads the Junior Team (Under 7’s). Affectionately known as ‘the peewees’. She draws on her years of experience in childcare, parenting and group fitness background to keep the Junior team focussed in class with a nurturing but disciplined approach. Claire handles member enquiries, events, coach compliance and the day to day running of the club. Most importantly she’s our Designated Safe Guarding Lead. He was promoted to black belt in March 2020 by Professor Matt Wilson. Alonso has competed in BJJ through Purple belt and in 2017 won two weight divisions in MMA. He’s well known at Blue Wave for his calm but precise coaching style and will regularly give members specific technical feedback on how to improve their game. He just never stopped coming. He didn’t stop until his belt turned black. Tom started training Jiu Jitsu before most people knew what it was! In December 2023 Tom was awarded his black belt. Blue Wave’s first ‘home grown’ Black Belt. His coaching style is down to earth and very popular at Blue Wave. In 2006 he began his competition career turning semi pro level then pro. At a time when MMA was in its infancy. As the gym grew Ash was given an opportunity run his own school soon becoming recognised as having some highest quality fighters in the country. Some of whom reached the pro ranks. Ash’s coaching style is always to have fun first, as firstly you must enjoy what you are doing and then you will learn at a greater speed. He quickly progressed through his belts while competing across the UK. At the age of 16 he was awarded his black belt. As an adult Wayne competed regularly across the UK and Europe taking gold at the Commonwealth Masters. He’s trained in karate ever since, achieving his black belt in 2002 and competing locally, nationally and internationally in kumite (fighting). Chris is also a highly talented BJJ Player. In his late teens/early twenties he was training with the England national team as well as starting to cross train in kickboxing, boxing and jiu-jitsu and Judo. Chris has produced karate national champions, England national squad members who have competed at European & World championships and had a student achieve world number 1 ranking. In his teenage years he was selected by Karate Wales to compete nationally and internationally reaching brown belt in 2011. Rob has also competed in numerous freestyle, light contact and full contact Kickboxing shows. In his early 20s he joined the Fire Service and continued to train in martial arts. It was at this point he retired from competing to focus on coaching. Since then Rob retrained and is now a highly skilled Paramedic. This career brought Rob to Suffolk where he found Blue Wave. Rob’s focus is coaching and training the Kickboxing team. We are grateful to have such a reliable talented athlete like Rob on our coaching team. Like many Dan took a training break while he balanced career and family until 2021 when Dan rediscovered his love of martial arts through Blue Wave. This means that your child can do different Martial Arts with us. We offer Karate,, Kickboxing, Judo, MMA (age 10+) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Most children settle into something they love but we have many that cross train. We recommend they train at least twice a week in order to grow in their sport. Classes for our youth members start with a warm up then some learning, then a short break for play. This resets their attention for more learning. Even our games are related to the Martial Art they’re learning and are very popular. We encourage you to let us coach your child and deal with any issues that come up. This might be bumps, or a discipline matter, or managing boisterous behaviour. Doing this fosters independence and the idea that when they are in class they look to their coaches for direction, not their parents. This includes not calling out to your child while they’re in class. This helps children with their confidence. In each class there is a Coach and several assistant coaches. Our youth Martial Arts offering is second to none. Our highly qualified and DBS checked coaches love teaching children and it shows on their (and the children’s) smiling faces. Our youth members learn important life skills at Blue Wave. Not just the Martial Art they practice but also respect for others, discipline, community, how to follow the rules, listening and how to look after each other. They’re encouraged to be independent and work with adults other than their parents. Parents feedback to us that their children grow in confidence after joining Blue Wave. Blue Wave coaches encourage grace in their wins but also in their defeats. Learning how to win is as important as learning how to lose and when two people spar only one will win! We encourage tenacity, responsiblity and perseverance. We take great care to teach ‘care of others’ in our classes. This means children are encouraged to look after each other and many of our more experienced youth members become young assistant coaches. This is something special about Blue Wave and as well as being encouraged to take care with each other they learn how to hold their boundaries and work together even though they’re competing. We have no hard and fast age. Whether they’re ‘ready’ depends on your child. Some of our youngest members are our most confident! But we will try age 3 and up. They aren’t always ready that young but some are. The only way to tell is to try! We have youth members as young as three join our classes all the way up to their teens when they begin to transition into the adult classes. We offer a free trial to allow your child to settle in and become familiar with their teammates and coaches before we ask you to join.
