Karate

NOW INCLUDING ADULTS

Our karate program includes sessions for youth and adult team.

These classes are fun for all age groups with sessions with a mix of striking and kata. Our Thursday sessions (adult and youth are more of a ‘fight style’) are based on the kumite style of karate led by coach Chris Stott,

A strong emphasis on self defence means you will also have the opportunity to learn weapons training such as the nunchuku and escrima sticks.

Children follow a syllabus and work towards their grades (belts). They wear a Karate Gi which is available through the club. When your child is ready for their grading you’ll be invited to do this (additional costs apply). You don’t have to participate in gradings but we do find it motivates the children in their learning. Teaches them to study, practice etc. Skills they need in life.

What is Karate?

Karate is a Japanese martial art whose physical aspects seek the development of defensive and counterattacking body movements.  The themes of traditional karate training are fighting and self-defence, though its mental and moral aspects target the overall improvement of the individual.

This is facilitated by the discipline and persistent effort required in training.

Karate is one of the striking arts - utilising the limbs to attack the opponent. Karate practices ‘kata’ - a physical and mental discipline that contains core principles of action, movement and mental discipline.

Kumite, translates to "grappling hands" or "meeting of hands," and is based more on the sparring / combat component of karate. This is extremely popular as students get to test live the three core pillars of karate training (alongside Kihon and Kata) and is used to develop timing, distance, speed, and strategy. Look for ‘combat’ in our schedule to book those sessions.
