Safety First
At Blue Wave Martial Arts, the long-term health of our members is more important than winning a round in the gym.
While controlled sparring is an important part of learning kickboxing, we actively promote technical, light-contact sparring, particularly when it comes to head contact. Growing research into the long-term effects of repeated blows to the head means we take a cautious, evidence-informed approach to training.
For our junior members, head contact is strongly discouraged during day to day sessions. There are times perhaps where were are competition training when it is permitted with protective equipment and under close coaching supervision. Even then, the emphasis remains firmly on control, technique and respect rather than power.
We believe the best martial artists are those who can demonstrate skill, control and good decision making, not simply hit the hardest. By training this way, our members can enjoy the benefits of kickboxing while reducing unnecessary risk and building skills that last a lifetime.
